Sports Management Meeting 11/3/08

Today the SMA club discussed the budget with the Intro to Sports Management Class and came up with ideas on how to raise money for the club. The ideas the club came up with are: design and sell t-shirts at sporting events, create t-shirts for different sports, hold events on campus for all students to particiapte in, conduct a raffel during different sporting events, and a SMA club booth at different events selling SMA club merchandise. We also discussed some events the club would like to attend. Some ideas were a Hurricanes game, Fireantz game, or a different professional game. The last thing discussed was what the club wants to accomplish during the first semester. Our mission is to create higher awareness about different sports games and activities on campus, conduct high school clinics, and attend a conference by the end of the year.

-The events the club came up with to hold on campus includethe following: Ultimate Frisbee tournament, 3 on 3 Basketball tournament, Volleyball tournament, Madden and/or Fifa tournament, and Dodgeball tournament.
*if you have any more ideas please let myself or any of the other officers know
-The T-shirt design the club agreed on are: Black shirt with Green and/or Gold writing with "SMA Club" on the front with the MU shield, and on the Back either everyone in the club's name, or a schedule of MU sporting/club events. The design and t-shirt price will be finalized during the club meeting.
*if anyone has any problems or suggestions with the club t-shirt please come to the next club meeting before the shirts are ordered.

Sport Management Mentor Program

Hey Guys...Check this out...This could be helpful for you...especially when you start looking for inernships and jobs...

Sports Management Mentor Program (SMMP)

Created by: John R. Vaughn, Chief Marketing Officer, bLinc Sports
Contact Info: E-mail john@bLincSports.com or call (865) 850-9323

I. Overview

a. Introduction

I’m proud to announce the launch of the Sports Management Mentor Program (SMMP) in March 2008. Why? Because I have a passion to mentor undergraduate and graduate sports management students, and those who have recently secured their first job in the sports marketing industry. Simply stated, I want to put my many years of sports marketing experience to work for a select group of individuals who are interested in forging ahead of their peers and making meaningful contributions in the sports industry.

There’s an incredible need in the marketplace for an effective mentoring program. A mentor who truly cares can provide you with an overwhelming advantage over the competition. For example, University of Central Florida Senior Associate Athletic Director Steve Angelucci has been my mentor for 14 years. He has not only provided me with wisdom and guidance that I wouldn’t have otherwise received, but he has also been directly responsible for helping me secure four (4) jobs. There’s power in having an active mentor in your life.

b. Testimonials

As you consider potential involvement in the SMMP, it’s important for you to know more about me. While I’ve included a biography at the conclusion of this document, there are some testimonials listed below, too.

Quote # 1

“I've had the personal and professional privilege of knowing John for over 14 years. I can say without reservation he is the finest, most responsible and honest person I've ever known. His seemingly boundless reservoir of talent, experience, integrity and good old common sense has made me resolve to someday work with him again." – Steve Angelucci, my mentor and the senior associate athletic director at the University of Central Florida

Quote # 2

“As a first year graduate student in the Ohio University MBA/MSA program, I am currently searching for internship opportunities. I reached out to John to discuss such opportunities and other advice regarding my future in the sports industry. Not only was he generous with his advice and sports knowledge, but within 12 hours (probably less!), he had already contacted 5 people on my behalf who he thought could provide me with further assistance. It's obvious that John truly wants to see me succeed and will do as much as he can to help get me there. We need more John Vaughn's in this industry!” – Janae Laverdiere, sports management student at Ohio University

Press Release

SPORT MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION CREATES NEW PARTNERSHIPS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARIA SIKORYAK-ROBINS
OCTOBER 11, 2007 DIRECTOR OF UNIVERSITY PUBLICATIONS

FAYETTEVILLE, NC—In an effort to develop a strategic plan that will effectively market the Fayetteville area as a destination for sports and entertainment, Sport Management students at Methodist University have created a partnership with the newly-formed Fayetteville Area Sports Authority. The Fayetteville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau made a $350 donation in support of the association’s efforts.

The students have also formed a partnership with Barefoot Saddles of Whispering Pines, N.C. The company’s owner, Brita Rizzi, imports treeless saddles from Germany. The students are working with Rizzi to market her product.

"My goal is to immerse my students into as many aspects of the sport industry as possible to help them find their niche. Once they find their area of interest, I want them to gain as much experience as possible to help land their dream job," said Greg Combs, B.S., M.A., Ed.D., assistant professor and director of the Sport Management Program at Methodist University.
MU’s Sport Management Association also conducted marketing audits for fifteen businesses within the Fayetteville area during the last academic year. The purpose of the audits were to assess the effectiveness of the organizations’ marketing orientation, marketing objectives, strategic planning processes, target markets, products and services, promotions, planning, pricing, and distribution methods.

Dr. Combs pointed out that the program has a specialty in sports business, which is one of its distinguishing characteristics. He is currently seeking accreditation with the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

Methodist University is an independent four-year institution of higher education with over 2,100 students from 41 states and 30 countries. Methodist University offers over 70 majors and concentrations, three master’s degree programs, and 19 NCAA II1I intercollegiate sports.
